-This is a fascinating example of a Mauser-manufactured P.08 Luger. A \"Russian Capture\" or \"East German Volkspolizei (VoPo)\" rework of a 1938 S/42 Luger.
Appears to be matching numbers besides toggle with no forced fit parts. Beautiful gun in excellent condition.
-The \"X\" Mark (Russian Capture): The \"X\" struck on the left side of the receiver (near the serial number) is the most significant mark here.
-This is a Soviet capture mark. After WWII, the Soviet Union captured millions of German small arms, refurbished them, and put them into long-term storage or supplied them to satellite states (like East Germany or Vietnam).
-S/42 and 1938: The \"1938\" on the chamber and the \"S/42\" code (visible in the script on the toggle) identify this as a Mauser production model made for the Wehrmacht in 1938
After careful inspection, this firearm appears to be matching numbers or majority matching numbers which is rare for Russian Captures as they typically have majority replacements
-Serial Number: 4049
-“49" being visible on all important visible parts.
Magazine also stamped 4049
-This firearm has Black Bakelite Grips typically referred as Black Widow Grips or Configuration.
-The Crown/N and Proofs: You can see the Eagle/63 Waffenamt (military inspector) stamps. These are the correct acceptance marks for a 1938 Mauser-made P.08.
This pistol has lived \"two lives\":
1. First Life (1938–1945): It was a front-line sidearm for the German military during the buildup to and the duration of World War II.
2. Second Life (Post-1945): It was captured by the Red Army, sent to a Soviet or East German arsenal, stripped, re-blued (the dark, dipped-black finish is typical of these reworks), and reissued to East German police or kept in a crate for decades as a \"just in case\" weapon for a potential “World War III"
Overall condition is excellent! Blueing is in fantastic shape for the age, fully functional, grips are an excellent tight fit. Barrel is clean with strong rifling.
Over all an incredible piece.
