Duane Wiebe custom takedown Mauser 98 .404 Jeffery. Serial 28161 (Wiebe rifle number 0812) is an outstanding example of gunmaking art. The 25-inch barrel ( .675-inch muzzle diameter, banded and hooded front sight base with button release and brass-beaded blade, banded sling swivel stud, banded island rear sight with one fixed and two folding leafs marked 50/100/250) as well as all metal surfaces is finished in a satin silver. Features include a quick-release mounting system (30mm low rings), reshaped bolt handle with checkered knob (three bordered teardrop panels), custom shroud with a three-position safety, extended/tapered upper tang, reshaped and checkered bolt release, custom bottom metal (inside-the-bow release button), tuned trigger and an extended/tapered lower tang. STOCK: Crafted from a blank with dense, sinister figure, appointments include wrapping flat diamond checkering with a partial double border, crossbolt, scalloped pancake cheek rest with shadow line, leather-wrapped recoil pad with widow's peak and a recessed sling swivel stud. ENGRAVING: Unsigned but wonderfully executed, a fine accent scroll dresses the bottom metal, tangs, crossbolt and screws. TAKEDOWN: Upon opening the bolt and releasing the latch, the barrel/forearm threads out of the receiver. A pressure plate ensures there is no movement when assembled. OPTIC: Riding in a quick-release mount, the Schmidt & Bender 1.25-4x20 has an adjustable ocular, G3P reticle and click adjustments. The optic is clear with wiping marks on the lens coatings. CAPACITY: Five rounds (four plus one). The extractor face “snaps over” single-fed rounds. Feeding/extraction/ejection are smooth and positive. DIMENSIONS: Weight (with optic) is 10.8 pounds. Length-of-pull is 13.8 inches. Greatest length when apart is 25 inches. CONDITION: The bore is strong and bright. Mechanics are solid. Metal finish crowds 90 percent with a modest distribution of tarnish. Wood is approximately 95 percent. No case or papers. The price is firm and layaway is available. $17,500 plus shipping.
