Description:
This rifle is in excellent condiion and not been fired very much. The Triticon sight uses tritium to illuminate the yellow triangle style aiming image, day or night.   The sight mount extends beyond the carry handle for a better cheek weld when shooting.

Colt SP1 rifles are the original semi-automatic civilian versions of the military M16, designed as lightweight, modern sporting rifles with features like triangular handguards, a fixed carry handle, and a 20-inch pencil barrel, chambered in .223/5.56mm, distinguished by early models lacking a forward assist and brass deflector for a cleaner, classic AR-15 profile. They represent the genesis of the popular AR-15 platform, appealing to collectors for their historical significance and "retro" aesthetic, though they were initially met with skepticism compared to traditional firearms.
Key Characteristics:
  • Action: Direct gas impingement, rotating bolt, semi-automatic.
  • Caliber: .223 Remington / 5.56x45mm NATO.
  • Barrel: 20-inch, lightweight "pencil" profile, often with a 1-in-12" twist rate.
  • Furniture: Original models feature distinctive triangular handguards and fixed stocks.
  • Upper Receiver: Early versions lack a forward assist and brass deflector (like the M16A1).
  • Sights: Fixed carry handle with a rear sight adjustable for windage only; elevation adjusted via the front sight post.
  • Flash Hider: Early models often had a three-prong flash hider, evolving to a "bird-cage" style later.
Historical Significance:
  • Genesis of the AR-15: The SP1 brought the revolutionary M16 design to the civilian market starting in 1964, making it the first popular AR-15 for hunters and sport shooters.
  • "Space Age" Design: Its lightweight polymer construction and modern design were considered futuristic compared to wood and steel rifles of the era.
  • Collector's Item: Its "retro" look and connection to the earliest M16s make it highly sought after by enthusiasts today.
Evolution:
  • Over time, Colt added features like the forward assist and brass deflector to later models, but the SP1 maintains its iconic, streamlined look.
