Description:
Remington was contacted to build these rifles from 1846 to 1854. A total of 10,000 were delivered from 1850 through 1854. The lock on this example is dated 1848 indicating that they used locks dated 1848 and 1849 when building rifles for the 1850 or later shipments. In early 1860, the government contracted with F.H. Grosz of NYC to convert 1600 rifles to accept the Model 1842 socket bayonet. This was done by turning down the barrel muzzle 2 3/4" and adding a small square lug at base. The front sight was also moved back past the turned down area. These were delivered to New York for use by the New York 7th, 10th, 12th and 192nd regiments very early in the war. Rifle features the distinctive two piece brass patch box located on left side of stock. The lock exhibits the US and 1848 date as well as REMINGTON HERKIMER NY legend. The walnut stock shows two cartouche inspector boxes but initials no longer legible. Barrel is finished in the white. The nose cap, rear barrel band, trigger guard, side plate, patch box and butt plate furniture are all brass. The left side of stock has a large HS owners initials hand carved. CONDITION: Very good+. A crisp rifle. The barrel exhibits usual oxidation. Brass is toned but was cleaned at one time. The stock is solid showing usual dings and light abrasions. Mechanically sound. The rifled bore is well pronounced but does show some residue.
