Antique ENGRAVED PAIR British WHEELER Flintlock DUELING/OFFICER’S Pistols

HISTORICAL Attractive Late-1700s/Early-1800s BRACE w/ Set Triggers!

Here Ancestry Guns presents an antique Pair of Wheeler Flintlock Dueling Pistols, made circa the late 1700s to the early 1800s likely in London, England. Between 1767 and 1813, Robert Wheeler has a shop in London and was known for making box-lock flintlock pocket pistols with under spring bayonets and flintlock dueling pistols. Under Royal Government contract, he was also known for making brass barrel flintlock blunderbusses, flintlock holster pistols, and musketoons. He had a contract with the Hudson's Bay Company for flintlock trade muskets. Wheeler was also one of the sixteen contractors hired by the British Board of Ordnance during the War of 1812 to produce trade guns for Native American allies and delivered a total of 1,491 Northwest Trade Guns between 1813 and 1816.

Dueling pistols have a long history, symbolizing a time when honor was what people based their lives on. These pistols were designed for one purpose, which was deciding disputes when words failed. Throughout Europe and early America, dueling was a deadly tradition that truly shaped history. The pistols themselves became legendary, often linked to dramatic confrontations where skill, nerve, and fate collided. Each of these played a role in moments where lives and reputations hung in the balance, leaving a lasting mark on history. For a great example, look how United States history was impacted by Alexander Hamilton.

Purpose-built dueling pistols have various improvements to make them more reliable and accurate, such as longer and heavier barrels, spurs on the trigger guards, saw handles, platinum-lined touch-holes on the flintlock, and hair triggers. All component parts were manufactured, hand-finished and then adjusted with great care and precision, which made dueling pistols much more costly than standard firearms of the period. Special care was taken when molding the lead bullets to ensure that there were no voids which would affect accuracy. Pistols were carefully and identically loaded, and each duelist was offered his choice of the indistinguishable loaded pistols. As duels were generally fought at short distances which were paced out, typically 35 to 45 feet between stationary opponents, extreme accuracy was not required. Here are two nice examples of European craftsmanship. Both of these pistols are matching, feature engravings and checkered grips.

The overall condition of this set of pistols is very good. Both actions are strong. Fully functioning set triggers. Both bores are in good shape for their ages and remain smooth. Original dark brown patinas. One pistols has a stable repaired crack at the rear barrel pin. Both stocks are very good with light handling evidence and a checkered grip. Markings are legible.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrels are 9 inches.
