BRACE of ENGRAVED Antique PARKER FIELD & SONS Percussion DUELING Pistols

HISTORICAL Pair of LONDON Made DUELERS

Here Ancestry Guns presents an antique Engraved Pair of Parker Field & Sons Percussion Dueling/Target Pistols, made circa the mid-1800s in London, England. The Parker Field & Sons firm were in operation under that name from 1841 to 1886. Dueling pistols have a long history, symbolizing a time when honor was what people based their lives on. These pistols were designed for one purpose, which was deciding disputes when words failed. Throughout Europe and early America, dueling was a deadly tradition that truly shaped history. The pistols themselves became legendary, often linked to dramatic confrontations where skill, nerve, and fate collided. Each of these played a role in moments where lives and reputations hung in the balance, leaving a lasting mark on history. For a great example, look how United States history was impacted by Alexander Hamilton.

Purpose-built dueling pistols have various improvements to make them more reliable and accurate, such as longer and heavier barrels, spurs on the trigger guards, saw handles, platinum-lined touch-holes and hair triggers. All component parts were manufactured, hand-finished and then adjusted with great care and precision, which made dueling pistols much more costly than standard firearms of the period. Special care was taken when molding the lead bullets to ensure that there were no voids which would affect accuracy. Pistols were carefully and identically loaded, and each duelist was offered his choice of the indistinguishable loaded pistols. As duels were generally fought at short distances which were paced out, typically 35 to 45 feet between stationary opponents, extreme accuracy was not required. Here are two nice examples of European craftsmanship. Both of these pistols are matching, feature beautiful engravings and checkered grips.

These examples are marked “PARKER FIELD & SONS” on the lock. Per The Vintage Gun Journal: “The origins of the business started with John Field, who had been a goldsmith, sword cutler and gun maker at 233 High Holborn from 1783 to 1791. He traded under his name and also as Field & Co and Field & Clarke. When John died in 1791, William Parker went into partnership with his widow, and they traded as Field & Parker. In about 1814, William's daughter, Mary, married John Field Junior.” “William Shakespeare Field died in 1875, and John William Parker Field continued running the firm until he died in 1879. The firm ceased business in 1886 after just over 100 years in the trade. As to the address, High Holborn street, where Parker Field & Sons was located, was central and very well located; Charles Dickens lived on High Holborn for a while, as did William Morris, the influential designer and promoter of the Arts and Crafts movement.”

The barrels are marked “HOLBORN, LONDON” and the lockplates are marked “PARKER FIELD & SONS”. The locks, breeches/tangs, and furniture are floral scroll engraved.
The overall condition is very good. Original, light gray patina. Both actions are strong. Dimmed and rifled bores. Both pistols have nicely checkered grips and solid refinsihed stocks overall. The locks are lightly engraved with floral designs. Markings are discernable.
