Description:
Serial #3030, 12 Bore, 32" barrels with good, lightly pitted bores. This is a handsome and well-proportioned gun that has a strong twist pattern on the barrels with small spots of mild freckling and shallow pinprick pitting scattered along their lengths. The barrels have an added "JOSEPH MANTON DAVIES STREET BERKELEY SQUARE LONDON" marking along the center rib with Joseph Manton patent proofs and platinum inlays at the breech. The barrels have matching "3030" numbers faintly visible on the undersides of both tubes, as well as on the underside of the breech-piece. Both locks are tight and function flawlessly, with original, fully functional "JOSEPH MANTON / LONDON" marked locks having lightly engraved swan necked cocks and waterproof pans. The English walnut stock has been nicely refinished with still relatively sharp checkering on the wrist, and numerous small handling marks and surface blemishes scattered throughout. There is a large chip missing from the bottom rear edge of the left lockplate, while the interior of the forend has two large modern repairs under the breech portions of the barrels when the gun is assembled. There is a further exterior repair to a split in the wood at the nose of the forend on the right side as well. The stock is fastened by a single wedge with oval escutcheons and a moderately pitted trigger guard that has a matching "3030" number on the tail. The buttplate has an overall plum-brown patina with thin surface oxidation, and the gun comes with what looks to be the original brass-tipped mahogany ramrod held by two plain cylindrical thimbles and a decorated tail-pipe with stylized pineapple finial. This is a very well-made and attractive gun and would make a great addition to any collection. Antique;
