Description:
General Specs: L.C. Smith, 1919, 20 Gauge, 5lbs. 15oz., Chokes LTSK/IMK, LOP 14 1/2", DAH 2 5/16", DAC 1 1/2"
Serial Number: FWE15216

The Crown Grade Elsie; one of the finest, most elegant American doubles ever produced.  The Crown Grade was certainly a special “MADE TO ORDER” shotgun, with only 846 made in all gauges.  According to the L.C. Smith Collectors Association Letter (pictured), there were only 17 Crown Grades made in 1919 in all gauges, and only 20 in all of history had this exact configuration.  The details abound on this beauty.  The 28” barrels have an engraved border at the muzzle, wedges of scroll and borders on the breech, mirror bores, 99% factory blue, with only a few light handling marks to note. The solid rib is finished with border and matting, as well as an ivory mid bead and ivory and silver front bead. The barrel rib extension is engraved with a geometric pattern and is separated from the rib by an engraved gold bar.  The barrels were hand-engraved  with L.C. Smith Crown Grade on the right and Made to Order by the Hunter Arms Co. Inc., Fulton, N.Y. on the left.  The receiver has had a professional restoration of the color case-hardening, showing off the stunning floral, scroll, and game scene engraving on the frame, sidelocks, and top lever, which also hosts a gold inlayed crown.  The manual safety, Hunter One Single Selective Trigger, and well-timed ejectors all function as they were intended.    The forend is tipped with an ebony wedge, extensively covered by beautiful checkering, and hosts an engraved banjo-shaped escutcheon with the roller-style release. The round pistol grip has a checkering pattern that covers all but a tiny center border, following up the sides and connecting over the wrist in a seamless and noteworthy pattern.  The rich walnut has sweeping dark grain throughout.  The wood is “as found” and shows honest field use in the hand-rubbed oil finish.  The stock terminates in a classic Silvers buttpad.

This shotgun is built to be enjoyed.  Carrying a sub-six-pound 20 gauge afield is a delightful experience.  This classy example is ready for many more days on the skeet field, or in the field in search of upland game.  Thanks for looking!
