Description:
Early Savage Arms Transitional Model 25 .22 Pump Rifle
Offered here and just acquired is this excellent early vintage Savage arms Co. of Utica NY .22 caliber pump rifle. Serial number 3198 it is all original with 24" octagon barel. The specimen retains the large majority of its finish, light in spots but metal and wood are in excellent condition AS IS BORE.
Early Savage .22 pump .22 rifles were made by Savage Arms Company in Utica, New York before the company’s later production shift in the late 1930s. Savage stamped “Manufactured by Savage Arms Corp. Utica, N.Y. U.S.A.” on barrels of many early models — a key dating clue to pre-World War II manufacture.
This model – a transitional  variant of Models 1903 / Model 1914  were produced in the early 1900s into the 1920s. These rifles were prized for being robust, functional slide-action .22s.
Examples from catalogs confirm these were made with 24″ barrels and sometimes octagon barrels, saw use with .22 Short, .22 Long, and .22 Long Rifle cartridges, and were popular as utilitarian small game and target rifles.
With a very low serial number (3198), this rifle is likely among the earlier production runs of these models — possibly very early 1900s to mid-1910s, before Savage standardized later model names and parts. Exact dating usually requires stamping codes inside the receiver or gunsmith inspection, but Utica marks alone almost always put it pre-late 1930s. transitional
A very fine early collectible Savage Arms rifle.
