Infantry Rifle Here Ancestry Guns presents a C&R Sporterized Conversion of a U.S. Smith-Corona Model 03A3 Bolt Action Infantry Rifle, made in 1943 in Syracuse, New York. The 1903A3 rifle had a production run from 1903 through 1949 with over 3,000,000 produced. Early during World War II, Smith-Corona shifted away from making typewriters to producing Model 1903A3 Springfield Rifles with the assistance from Remington Arms and High Standard Manufacturing Company. Smith-Corona produced a total of 234,580 rifles during the course of the war. Initially, the 1903 Springfield was chambered in a new .30-03 caliber. The cartridge employed a rimless, necked-down case with a 220-grain round-nosed bullet that left the muzzle of the 24-inch barrel at some 2,300 feet-per-second. Though the round was certainly adequate for military work, when the Germans adopted a superior pointed spitzer bullet in 1904, the Americans followed suit with their own version that had a 150-grain cupro-nickel-jacketed bullet that boosted the older round's velocity by some 400 fps. And thus, the famed .30-06 was born. This example has been refinished and sporterized. The overall condition is very good. Strong, smooth action. The bore is shiny bright and reflective with sharp rifling. The stock contains minimal handling wear. A thin hairline crack is on the wrist. Markings are sharp. The barrel has been cut down.
