.32 Safety Hammerless. Lemon Squeezer. New Departure. You may hear this model referred to by any of those names. Officially, this is the Smith & Wesson New Departure in .32 S&W. However, you also heard it referred to in semi-official circles as the .32 Safety Hammerless. Collectors and shooters? Well, most of them just called it the lemon squeezer because of the grip safety on the backstrap.
The New Departure revolvers were made from 1887 through 1940 and there were a number of different engineering/model changes during the run. Smith & Wesson also had some overlap on serial numbers with some revolvers from different model series having the same serial numbers. The serial number on this revolver is 166568. The serial numbers on the butt of the grip, the face of the cylinder and the underneath side of the top latch all match.
There were several different barrel lengths on this model line but ours is 3.5 inches. The fluted cylinder holds five rounds. Loading the cylinder is accomplished by grabbing the sides of the top latch and pulling up so that the barrel tips forward and the cylinder is fully exposed. This one breaks open easily, as it should. The revolver has an internal hammer so it functions only in double action mode.
The grip has a grip safety (think 1911 grip safety) that must be depressed for the revolver to function. It is depressed when you hand squeezes into a normal grip. That gives the revolver its nickname of the Lemon Squeezer.
The bore appears to be in good shape and we’ve included a picture of the cylinder face as well. The barrel is very bright. The rifling for 32 S&W was not very deep when revolvers chambered for that when they left the factory. The rifling in this revolver appears to be normal 32 S&W rifling.
The handles are pearl-type and are in Very Good condition. Take a good look at the photos and we think that you’ll agree.
The nickel finish is almost entirely intact except for a couple of small areas on the right side of the front sight. For a revolver of this age, we would normally expect to see considerable finish loss but we don’t on this one. It really is in fantastic condition.
If you’re after a vintage, great looking Smith revolver, we think that it would be hard to go wrong here. Please take a look at the photos and see if this is the one that you were missing!
