Description: Possible Employee Takehome Officer’s Model .22 W/Original Scarce Coltwood Factory Grips c.1937 Offered here and just acquired by us from a local estate in Connecticut is a very interesting original Colt Officer’s Model .22 revolver circa 1937. With our retail operation and gallery in Southport, CT and as the oldest dealer in the state we have acquired over our more than 5 decades in operation hundreds of unique firearms-prototypes, show guns, special editions and employee takehome specimens from Colt in Hartford, CT just 45 miles away. This appears to be one of them. Purchased from an individual who had an acquaintance who worked for Colt may have been a takehome piece – for a couple of reasons. First, a description of the revolver. This is an Officers Model .22 revolver serial number 17470 with a 6” barrel. The specimen was manufactured circa 1937. Aside for one flaw in the finish the revolver is near 100% but we will explain later. Second, the revolver is equipped with original Colt factory “Coltwood” grips which should be important to Colt collectors. Coltwood was the name Colt gave to a synthetic grip material it developed and used primarily in the 1940s–1950s. It was a phenolic/plastic material (similar to Bakelite or reinforced phenolics) rather than real wood. The term Coltwood was Colt’s own marketing name — essentially a plastic designed to resemble wood grain but be cheaper and more durable than traditional wood. Coltwood grips were commonly factory-installed on many Colt revolvers produced in this era — including Official Police, Detective Special, Cobra, and other medium and small frame models before being phased out in the 1950s. Early Coltwood grips often had a multi-colored, wood-grain appearance (orange/black/brown swirl) meant to mimic wood. Later Coltwood was often a solid brown plastic as manufacturing shifted, and some of these later grips are known for shrinkage issues over time due to the resin aging. This appears to be the case with this specimen. Now in the post war years Colt utilized left over parts as well as grips which may be the case with this slightly earlier Colt model. Now, regarding the “flaw” in the revolver which is in the inner grip strap near butt of gun. It appears as a “scrape” of sorts with a loss of finish. Very unusual which may account for it being a specimen offered to an employee (at a lower price) and left the factory a bit later than 1937 -and with some takehome Coltwood grips. Now all this may be supposition as the owner from whom we obtained the piece acquired it decades ago and does not remember the individual’s name who may have been a Colt employee. But as is an excellent conditioned vintage Colt Officer’s model with MINT CONDITION scarce Coltwood grips. L549 Thanks for your bid.
