Description:
Serial #1472, 12 GA (2 3/4" chambers), 32 inch Laminated Steel barrels with very good bores with scattered light pitting choked full and about full. This is the A.J. Aubrey side by side hammerless shotgun manufactured by the Meriden Fire Arms Company in Meriden, CT which was owned and operated by Sears, Roebuck & Co. producing firearms from 1905 to 1911 with the shotgun line named after the Sears treasurer Albert James Aubrey (A.J. Aubrey) who served many roles and was eventually President of the Firearms Division at Meriden with 8 firearms patents in his name. They are highly regarded as high quality guns that could be sold at a fraction of the cost of fine English ones. This early example features beautifully done foliate engraving on the frame and has the rarely seen Aubrey's patented "Disappearing Sight" on the mid rib, patent #839,535, which was used on higher grade shotguns. The barrels show much of the original Browned twist pattern with areas of finish loss on the left tube and a few scattered freckles and stains. The rib is marked "MFD BY THE MERIDEN FIRE ARMS CO..MERIDEN,CONN.PAT.APPLIED FOR". The engraved receiver is marked "THE A.J. AUBREY" on each side plate and shows much of the original case-colors with crisp deep engraving. The checkered stock and forearm are both solid with scattered old contusions and finish level scratches. It sports the original hard rubber grip cap and flying duck logo A.J. Aubrey butt plate. Mechanically it functions properly with the barrels on face and a tight lock up, the lever resting just slightly left of center. The LOP is 13 3/4" with drops of 1 ½" and 3" at the comb and heel respectively. A beautiful example of these higher grade shotguns sold by Sears. FFL or C&R
