Description:
These .71 weapons were produced in Austria and sold in large numbers to Garibaldi’s Italian revolutionaries hence the name. When the Civil War broke out in the US these weapons were bought by Union arms procurers and modified to percussion in Liege before shipment to the US. An unknown number were procured by the Confederacy. The issue was that neither side provided the correct diameter, flat base .71 bullets, but instead issued. 69 Minie bullets. Resulting accuracy was poor. A proper sized PRB produces very good results in the 12 groove bore. It has a 32.50 inch round barrel with a blade front sight at top and a bayonet lug on the right side of the muzzle. The barrel surface is semi-bright with spotted mottling scattered throughout. The barrel is anchored to the stock by a pin forward of the triggerguard and a single iron barrel band at the end of the stock. Bore has great rifling and generally bright. The lock and hammer match the barrel in surface color. Lock is blank except for a small crown stamped at far rear. Action is strong and works well. The Beechwood stock is in nice condition with a cheek rest on the left side. It has a nice finished surface with only minor dings and dents. No cracks. Buttplate and triggerguard as well as the lock escutcheon are made of brass. Brass surfaces are turning dark and are lightly scratched. Both sling swivels are present as is the correct original ramrod. LOP is 12.75. The rifle weighs about 9.8 lbs. $1050 + Shipping.
