This is a fine example of a very seldom seen 1892. The barrel and magazine show most of the original deep blue with only some very light age and edge wear. There are also a few very small dings on the left side of the rear sight dovetail where someone was a bit sloppy in tapping the sight base. The receiver is typical of 1920s vintage Winchester lever rifles in that the case hardening process used during this time made the blue flake rapidly. Usually these guns are found with silver gray receivers. Typically the blue would turn a plum/brown and then flake to gray. This one shows good blue in the more protected areas (front and rear of the side panels etc.) with the balance in the “brown” stage before flaking to gray. There is some gray on the receiver ring and edges with excellent blue on the bolt and loading gate. The screw heads retain good blue and appear unturned. Exc. markings including the correct late M-92 barrel stampings. Original buckhorn rear sight with elevator bar intact and small Winchester blade front sight. Tight action with strong safety half-cock and exc. bore that is only a little dark with strong rifling. Generally excellent stock and correct 1” shorter forend (8 3/8”) with the butt stock showing nice fancier than standard fiddle back grain- on special order rifles Winchester often selected a higher grade walnut, as this one certainly shows. This is probably one of the last ones like this made as the Model 53 was replacing the Model 1892. In 1910 Winchester turned out 64,833 M-92s; by 1926 they were down to 18,898; by 1929 (the year of the Great Stock Market Crash) when this one was built Winchester only made 2,720 1892s and by the following year in 1930 that number “crashed to only 491 Model 1892s manufactured! 1929 was the last year Winchester made over 1,000 ‘92s. Short rifles like this were very popular in the Southwest states especially along the Mexican border. This example recently came out of Arizona. Probably one of the very last 1892 short rifles made especially in desirable .44-40 caliber.
