Offered here is a classic Winchester Model 42 chambered in .410 bore, one of the most iconic small bore American shotguns ever produced. The Model 42 was Winchester’s only pump shotgun built specifically for the .410 cartridge and has long been regarded as the “Model 12’s little brother” in both quality and handling.
This example features a 26 inch barrel marked Improved Cylinder (IMP CYL) choke, a configuration that is encountered far less frequently than Full or Modified choke guns. Improved Cylinder Model 42s are particularly desirable among upland hunters and collectors who appreciate the versatility and balance of the longer 26” barrel paired with the more open choke.
The barrel is ribless with a correct brass front bead, and the bore is bright, shiny, and free from pitting or frosting. Metal finish remains in excellent overall condition with only light, honest handling wear. There is no rust present. The walnut stock and classic “corn cob” style forend are solid and original, showing only minor handling marks consistent with careful use. There are no cracks in the wood.
Mechanically, the shotgun is excellent. The action cycles smoothly, the lock up is tight, and the gun functions exactly as a proper Winchester pump should. These post war Model 42s are known for their superb machining, durability, and smooth operation.
The Winchester Model 42 was produced from 1933 to 1963, with total production far lower than most other Winchester repeating shotguns of the era. As the only .410 pump built on its own true small frame, the Model 42 occupies a special place among Winchester collectors. Original, high-condition examples with less common choke markings such as this IMP CYL barrel continue to grow in desirability.
