The Winchester Model 42 is widely considered the finest pump action shotgun ever built for the .410 bore and stands as one of the most collectible American sporting arms of the 20th century. Introduced in 1933 as a true scaled frame gun specifically engineered for the .410 cartridge, the Model 42 was not simply a downsized larger gauge it was purpose built. That’s why these guns handle with such exceptional balance, smoothness, and durability.
This example was manufactured in 1951 and features a 26 inch ribless barrel choked Cylinder, a classic and highly desirable field configuration. The barrel retains correct Winchester factory markings, and the bore is bright, clean, and free from pitting or frosting.
The metal finish remains in excellent original condition with only very light, honest signs of handling. Mechanically, the shotgun functions exactly as it should, with the slick action and solid lock up that have made the Model 42 legendary among shooters.
The walnut stock and corncob style forearm are in excellent condition, showing only a few minor handling marks consistent with careful use. The stock retains its original Winchester butt plate, preserving the gun’s authentic factory configuration.
Model 42 production numbers were always modest compared to other Winchester models, and original, unaltered examples like this continue to grow in collector demand. The 26" Cylinder bore setup makes this gun equally attractive as a collector piece or as a light, fast handling field shotgun for small game and clays.
