Popularly Named the “PERFECT REPEATER”
Here Ancestry Guns presents a Very Scarce C&R Winchester Model 12 Slide Action Shotgun with a Stainless Steel Barrel, manufactured in 1927 in New Haven, Connecticut. These Model 12s with the Stainless Steel barrels were offered from September 1926 through December 1931. In that specified time frame, Winchester manufactured a total of 198,476 Model 12 shotguns (all gauges). It is estimated that just 1% of that number were fitted with a Stainless Steel barrel, making that a total of somewhere around 1,985 guns. Since stainless steel barrels were not popular and were available for a comparatively short time, all Winchesters with these barrels are very rare and quite valuable as collector’s items.
These barrels were crafted from Type 304 stainless steel (18/8), which was incompatible with traditional bluing techniques. Instead, Winchester used a “Japan Black” varnish finish to darken and protect the barrels. However, this finish was prone to flaking and did not withstand cleaning or environmental exposure, resulting in customer dissatisfaction and the discontinuation of this option by 1931. As a result, this piece is especially rare remaining in fine shape.
This shotgun was available in many barrel lengths, all possible chokes, numerous gauges and 11 different models. The Model 12 is an internal-hammer, pump-action shotgun with an external tube magazine. It was popularly named the “Perfect Repeater”.
This example is fitted with a Weaver Choke (skeet installed).
The overall condition is fine. Original finishes. Stainless steel barrel. The action is strong. Mirror bright, smoothbore. Markings are sharp. The stock is very good with light handling evidence and minor buttstock chips. Visible numbers match.
