The barrel is roll-marked: “ETHAN ALLEN & CO. WORCESTER MASS. ALLEN’S PAT SEPT. 7, NOV. 9, 1858 SEPT. 24, 1861.” The revolver retains approximately 90% of its original nickel finish, exhibiting only minor handling marks and light wear, with excellent overall eye appeal. The bore shows light oxidation with minor spot pitting, yet retains strong, well-defined rifling. All serialized parts are matching, including the frame and cylinder. Fitted with smooth factory rosewood grips, both in excellent condition and numbered to the revolver, still retaining strong original varnish. Grip fit and finish are outstanding, contributing significantly to the overall presentation. Mechanical Condition The action functions with a strong hammer spring, and the hammer and trigger operate correctly. The cylinder hand is missing, preventing cylinder rotation. This condition is noted for accuracy and does not detract from the revolver’s strong cosmetic condition or rarity. Rarity and Production Ethan Allen side hammer pocket revolvers were produced during the late 1850s through the early 1860s, representing a transitional period in American revolver development bridging percussion and early cartridge concepts. The 8th Issue is among the later and more refined variants, incorporating improvements covered by Allen’s 1858 and 1861 patents. Surviving examples are scarce, particularly those retaining high original nickel finish, matching serial numbers throughout, and excellent factory grips. Most encountered examples today show significant finish loss, mechanical wear, or replaced components. Collector-grade revolvers such as this, with strong originality and visual appeal, are infrequently offered. Company Background Ethan Allen was one of the most influential early American firearms designers and manufacturers. Operating in Worcester, Massachusetts, Allen & Company played a pivotal role in the development of revolvers and repeating firearms during the mid-19th century. Allen’s patented designs laid important groundwork for later American handgun innovation, and his revolvers were widely sold in both civilian and frontier markets. Collector Summary This revolver represents a beautiful, high-condition example of a rare Ethan Allen side hammer pocket revolver, distinguished by strong original nickel finish, matching serialized components, and excellent factory grips. Despite the noted mechanical deficiency, it remains a highly desirable collector piece with exceptional display appeal and historical significance, suitable for advanced collections of early American revolvers.
