Very good shiny bore with distinct rifling. Sights include a barleycorn front and an "1873" marked carbine rear. Winchester barrel address is crisp and clear and has a 44B caliber marking. Barrel and magazine tube retain most lightly faded thinning blue. Brass receiver has a mild patina with some scratches and marks. Hammer has some nice colors while the lever has traces of color but is mostly a gray/brown. Loading gate has good fire blue remaining. Original saddle ring is present. Nice functioning action. Walnut forearm has traces of varnish and is in good condition. Buttstock has been lightly sanded and is a little bit shy at the tangs. 3-Piece cleaning rod is present in the stock compartment. Steel carbine buttplate appears to have been touched up. The 44 B marking indicates it was part of a 1,000 gun shipment of 44 Center Fire 1866 Carbines for Brazil. The Winchester Model 1866 Carbines made for Brazil were in .44 Henry Center fire Caliber. The meaning of the “B” in the caliber marking is uncertain but it is presumed to stand for “Brazil.” This carbine started life as a Center Fire but was later changed back to Rim Fire in May of 1891. This Fourth Model 1866 carbine has an interesting history as indicated by the Research Form.
