Description: The Merrell carbine was one of many breech loading carbines hastily adopted during the onset of the American civil war. This example is in fair to good overall condition for its age, with most of its finish having faded to a consistent brown patina and strong rifling present in the bore, though there is moderate pitting throughout. The stock has a crack forming at the wrist and one of the buttplate screws is somewhat stripped in the wood. The action is fully functional, though the lockplate is not number matching to the breech. It must also be noted that one of the leaf sights has been broken, leaving 2 leaf's remaining.
