Description:
PARISIAN PAIR Percussion DUELING PISTOLS Cased, Engraved FERDINAND CLAUDIN

Carved Fluted Stocks, Full Kit

Here Ancestry Guns presents a Brace of Dueling Pistols retailed by Ferdinand Claudin of Paris, France circa the 1840s. Ferdinand Claudin was one of the best known of the Parisian makers and dealers with his shop at 35 Blvd. des Italiens and specialized in ornate & high-end firearms. The case has a gilt marking on the interior of the case lid “FD CLAUDIN” for Ferdinand Claudin of Paris and contains a full complement of loading and maintenance equipment.

Despite laws against dueling as early as 1626 in France, dueling with both swords and pistols remained a tradition among military officers and gentlemen for nearly three additional centuries. As late as at least 1900, lethal pistol duels are documented in Paris. Rifled bores were the norm in France and most of continental Europe in the 19th century, especially as rifling was more widely adopted on firearms in general.

The overall conditions are fine. Very nice Damascus pattern on the barrels, fire blue on the ramrods, and faint case colors. Strong actions. Bores are in good condition with strong rifling. The stock on the first gun is in fantastic shape, while that of the second gun has been expertly repaired at the wrist as well as on the right side of the forearm; both stocks are solid. The barrels are Liege proofed on the underside. Clear markings. The case and accessories are fine. The case lid is slightly warped and is shy of closing flush at the front by 5/16”. A stately set of European Dueling Pistols that would be an excellent addition to the office or library.

Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.

Barrels are 7-3/8 inches.

Calibers: .54 Percussion
