Description:
Serial #7524, .45 Colt, 5 1/2" barrel with a very good bore that has minor patches of dark freckling within the grooves. This was frame was originally an 1874-made, 7 1/2" barrel cavalry revolver that was reworked into a so-called "Artillery" model with mixed parts and short 5 1/2" barrel by either Springfield Armory or Colt around the time of the Spanish-American War. The revolver retains 70-75% of the period blue finish on the replacement barrel with straight vertical rollmark and "D.F.C." (David F. Clark) inspector stamp on the underside, as well as the "D.F.C." and "0050" marked cylinder. There is mild gray fading at the muzzle and projecting edges, with thin brown freckling scattered about, heaviest on the cylinder. The "U.S." marked frame retains a commensurate amount of color case-hardening that has some small patches of mild freckling along the lower edge on either side. Bright nitre blue still remains on the ejector housing screw, and the loading gate is assembly numbered "898" on the rear. The backstrap retains about 85-90% of the bright added blue finish, with a small "A" (Orville W. Ainsworth) inspector stamp below the hammer, while the trigger guard, which has a commensurate amount of blue, is marked with an "H.N." (Henry Nettleton) ahead of the bow. The walnut grip is in very good-fine shape with minor handling marks and blemishes around the butt. No government inspector initials are present on the grip, which is marked with only a small "P" at the butt on the right side. The action lock-up is still tight, and the revolver functions flawlessly. An old brass collection tag numbered "73" is attached to the trigger guard, as is a small handwritten tag that states that the revolver was once the property of of a "Capt. W. L. David, who served in Company A, 2nd Regiment Ohio National Guard during Span Am War & Phillipean (sic) Insurrection." No officer by that name can be found listed in the rolls of the 2nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry, which was in federal service from May 10 to June 30, 1898, but there is a Pvt. William L. Davis listed as serving in Company D of the regiment. Perhaps he was the actual recipient of the revolver whose service history was somewhat embellished after the war. This is a splendid looking US Model 1873 Artillery Revolver, and is in fine overall condition. Antique;
