Offered here is an exceptional U.S. Arms Corp Abilene single-action revolver chambered in .44 Magnum, featuring the rare and highly desirable 8.5-inch barrel. This barrel length is seldom encountered and is notably well balanced, offering superb sight radius and handling without feeling muzzle-heavy.
Manufactured in the early 1970s, this Abilene represents one of the finest examples of American single-action craftsmanship of the era. The revolver exhibits extraordinary fit and finish, with extremely tight, precise tolerances and an action that is remarkably smooth and glass-like—a characteristic that has earned the Abilene its long-standing reputation among collectors as the “Python of single actions.”
The revolver retains its high-polish, mirror-bright blue finish, which is exceptionally deep and lustrous. The finish is often favorably compared by collectors to Colt’s Royal Blue and the classic Smith & Wesson Carbonia blue of the 1950s–60s, and in this example it remains vibrant, uniform, and virtually flawless.
This specimen is in mint, like-new condition, appearing unfired since leaving the factory, and it is accompanied by its original factory box—a significant plus for collectors and investors alike.
Historical Background
The Abilene revolver was designed by Forrest Smith and Sig Himmelmann and introduced in 1972 by United States Arms Corporation of Riverhead, New York. Its design thoughtfully blended features inspired by the Colt New Frontier with the strength and durability associated with the Ruger Blackhawk, resulting in a revolver that was both elegant and exceptionally robust.
The Abilene was offered primarily in .357 Magnum and .44 Magnum, with far fewer examples produced in .45 Colt. In 1979, production was acquired by Mossberg, and manufacturing continued until approximately 1983. Due to its strength, accuracy, and consistent quality, the Abilene became particularly popular among metallic silhouette shooters and serious handgun enthusiasts.
Today, original Abilenes—especially high-condition examples with uncommon barrel lengths and original packaging—are increasingly difficult to find and are recognized as an important chapter in the evolution of modern American single-action revolvers.
