Description:
This is a "Prairie Belt" M1876 belt that has the 1879 modification with the addition of 3 brass rings attached so use when carrying equipment, made by Watervliet Arsenal in Watervliet, New York, c.1880s. This example is canvas and leather with the Watervliet Arsenal stamp on the leather along with the inspector mark of "A.R. Smith". Another illegible inspector's initials are on the inside. On the back side of the loops it is hand marked "DRKERG 8696" or close to that. The belt has 50 loops with an overall length of 41 ½" X 2 ½" wide, including nice brass buckle. In very good condition with supple leather some fraying on the loops and soiling.;
