Description:

This is a very rare unique  antique Iver Johnson 2nd Model (1896–1908) original variation Safety Automatic Hammer revolver marked “6365 USX” with a  a United States Express Company property marking.
  • Black powder frame (not rated for modern smokeless)
  • Owl head grips (owl looking forward on 2nd model)
  • Top-break design , raised ribbed double barrel latch
  • Auto shell ejecting
  • nickel plate
  • 5 shot .32S&W

The United States Express Company (1854–1914) was one of the major pre-parcel-service express carriers. They moved money, payroll, securities, and valuable freight by rail. Express messengers rode the trains and were armed. Companies commonly marked revolvers with:
  • Company initials ( USX)
  • A rack, inventory, or employee number  6365)
  • Chambered in common defensive calibers (.32 S&W or .38 S&W)
  • Popular with guards and working men
Express companies did not exclusively buy Colts or Smith & Wessons — lower-cost but serviceable revolvers like Iver Johnsons were also used. Express-marked Iver Johnsons are far less common than Colt or S&W examples.
Most surviving USX-marked revolvers encountered are:
  • S&W top breaks
  • Colt DA revolvers
  • Sought after by railroad / express / Old West collectors
An Iver Johnson example is scarcer than standard production. Typically worth more than an unmarked example

Condition: 3” raised rib barrel with a frosted bore minor pitting from black powder use and still retains rifling. The metal of the revolver still retains most of the original nickel finish with some loss, flacking at the end of the muzzle  The original owl monogramed black checkered hard rubber grips are in very good condition with only minor wear and a small chip repair at the top of the left grip  The top-strap markings remain crisp and legible.   The revolver is over 125 years old and may have some metal fatigue on various springs, trigger , hammer etc.  Barrel to frame fit is tight. Mechanically works well in single and double action.  A little cylinder play at lock-up. Timing appears to be ok in double action but a little off in single action. These revolvers are only meant primarily as a collectible and if used,  should only can be used with black powder low pressure loads.
