Visit Orion Outdoors Company's website Description: Offered is a highly distinctive and exceptionally well-preserved Colt Single Action Army revolver, manufactured in 1929 and shipped in July of that year to Harry Burkhart, Jr. This revolver remains in very fine, minty condition and represents an outstanding example of Colt’s late-production Single Action Army during the transitional smokeless-powder era. The revolver is chambered in .38 caliber and will shoot modern .38 Special ammunition. Early .38 Special Single Action Armies are of particular interest to collectors, as they reflect Colt’s adaptation of its most famous revolver to modern cartridges during the late 1920s—a period when production numbers were comparatively low and the model was no longer a mass-market arm. These early examples are notably scarce today and are increasingly sought after for both historical significance and shootability. The revolver remains completely original and unaltered with the sole exception of the custom grips. Fitted with striking staghorn stocks inlaid with Buffalo/Indian Head nickels, the grips are professionally executed and visually compelling, evoking classic Western folk-art traditions. Importantly, the underlying revolver retains its original finish and configuration, preserving collector integrity while allowing the grips to stand as a distinctive period-style personalization. Condition throughout is exceptional, with strong original bluing, crisp markings, and excellent metal surfaces. Mechanical function is correct, featuring the classic and highly desirable four distinct hammer clicks, a hallmark of original Single Action Army lockwork. Timing and lockup are proper, further underscoring the revolver’s careful preservation. Factory documentation confirms shipment to Harry Burkhart, Jr. While no widely published historical record identifies Burkhart as a public figure, named shipments to private individuals are characteristic of Colt’s commercial distribution during this era. Such documentation places the revolver squarely in its historical context—as a personally owned, civilian-market Colt during a period when the American West had largely closed, yet the Single Action Army remained deeply ingrained in Western culture, ranching life, and sporting use. Adding to its appeal, this revolver originates from a Montana collection, a provenance that naturally complements the Western character of the Single Action Army and the period-inspired custom grips. While provenance is not overstated, it contributes to the revolver’s authentic regional narrative. The revolver is accompanied by a Colt factory letter confirming manufacture date, caliber, barrel length, and shipment to Harry Burkhart, Jr. in July 1929. Factory letters are essential for late-production Single Action Armies and add meaningful confidence and value for advanced collectors. Altogether, this revolver represents a rare opportunity to acquire an early .38 Special Colt Single Action Army in exceptional original condition, enhanced by tasteful custom grips and documented private-party shipment. It is a compelling blend of factory authenticity, late-production scarcity, and individualized Western character—well suited for a serious Colt or American arms collection.
