Description: This is a very interesting example of an NRA High Power Rifle built using the AR-15 platform. These types of rifles are sometimes referred to as “Space Guns.” This example uses the lower receiver of a Colt Sporter Match HBAR (Model 6601). It has been modified to accept an ambi bolt release lever that sticks on the right-hand side. It is quite different from the usual B.A.D. lever. The trigger is a Geissele Automatics match trigger. The upper appears to be a modified example of a side-charging upper once produced by Alexandria Pro Fab Co., known today as Adams Arms. It sports an extended rail up top, and unlike most side-charging receivers, retains the ability to use a conventional AR15 charging handle as a backup. The side-charging handle is reciprocating, hence the lack of a normal AR15 forward assist. The forearm of the rifle is the cylindrical type and has a metallic maroon finish. The rifle is currently fitted with a White Oak Armament fully-adjustable buttstock and a rubber target grip with a healthy amount of palmswell. Alternatively, the rifle does come with an A2 stock and pistol with a similar finish to the forearm. The stock is filled with a heavy lead weight (for balancing the rifle) but is currently missing the original butt plate (this can be sourced rather easily, however). The maroon finish seems to be flaking off of these parts, most notably on the forearm (especially the bottom, see the pictures). The 26-inch-long heavy stainless match barrel is unmarked but is the type typically found on these types of rifles. Although the twist is unknown, it is most likely to be either a 1 in 8 inches or a 1 in 7 inches twist for stabilizing the heavy, match-type bullets used in the NRA High Power matches. These bullets usually run between 73 and 77 grains. With the proper loads, the rifles are usually expected to hit targets at ranges not normally associated with the AR-15 or the 5.56/.223 cartridge. The sights are standard for a High Power rifle. The rear sight is similar to the MDT LRA Palma rear sight and it has been fitted with a Gehmann aperture sight. The front sight is a Palma-style globe type. Sight radius is a healthy 31 and 3/16 inches. The bore is in superb shape. There are some minor nicks and dings on the metal stock parts. Overall, this is a very unusual looking rifle, but one with the potential for exceptional accuracy. There is no magazine.
