Arisaka Japanese Type 99 – 7.7x58 – 26" Barrel – Full Chrysanthemum

There’s just a certain mystique (at least for us) around World War II service rifles. While we normally deal with U.S. weapons from World War II, we do sometimes come across rifles from the other countries. This Arisaka Type 99 (Type 2 Paratrooper Rifle) comes to us as a consignment sale and was manufactured at the Toyo Kogyo Arsenal. The series number on this particular rifle is hard to make out completely. However, Toyo Kogyo only manufactured rifles in Serie 30 – 35. That being the case, we believe that the rifle is from Series 30. Again, that’s our best estimate on a mark that’s not entirely legible.

This does not appear to be a late war production as the rifle still has the “normal" features for the Type 99. On the late war rifles, you’ll see certain features that changed or were eliminated as Japan ran out of more and more materials. The rifle has the normal two piece dovetailed stock construction. That’s not a crack in the stock that you see. Japan did not have enough large trees to make one piece buttstocks. The buttplate is metal and not the late war wood variety. The front sight does not have the protective wings or shroud from the earliest models and is just a fixed, blade sight.

This rifle does have a 5 shot internal box magazine. A hinged floorplate is located underneath the receiver. The bolt is one-piece construction with a straight bolt handle and the knob style safety on the rear of the bolt. The safety moves and functions correctly. There is no dust cover with this rifle. The rear sight is a peep style ladder sight with folding anti-aircraft lead arms. Ladder elevation adjustment on the rear sight is stiff but functional. The rear sling swivel is side mounted.

The wood on this rifle is what we’d expect to see from a military surplus rifle. It shows signs of use and it’s been dinged up a bit but it’s in good shape overall. The stock has, at some point, been sporterized so that it is not a full length handguard. The bore looks to be in good condition. The barrel is bright and the rifling seems to be good as well. The bolt is somewhat stiff but a good cleaning and lubricant should smooth that out. The trigger is firm.

Finish on the barrel is almost entirely intact. The receiver itself does show pitting as is shown in the photos.

The full chrysanthemum (or mum) is still intact on the top of the receiver and the correct Type 99 characters are just behind the mum. Arisaka rifles with intact mums have always been the more desired version. The owner of this rifle tells us that it’s a World War II bringback and was taken from a Japanese soldier in Leyte, Philippines.

Overall, this is a very nice example of a Arisaka Type 99 rifle. If you’re looking to add a Japanese battle rifle to your military surplus collection, this would be a nice looking one to fill that spot.

Purchase is for the rifle only. No other items or accessories are included.

This is a consignment sale and, like all of our consignments, we have not test fired this rifle. We have performed our normal function checks and find no issues beyond what is noted above. We did not engage the “knob" type safety. As with all pre-owned firearm purchases, please review the photos carefully so that you are fully comfortable with the condition of the rifle.
