Description:
Serial #26395, .32-40 Win, 30 inch barrel with a bright, excellent bore. This is custom restored Schuetzen style Ballard rifle built by Marlin. The barrel is marked "Ballard" on a top facet and shows virtually all of a later added blue finish and is numbered "20982" on the underside. There are engraved highlights around the muzzle and on rear of the barrel. The receiver features a single trigger and is marked "MARLIN FIRE ARMS CO. NEW HAVEN CT. U.S.A. / BALLARD'S.PATENT.NOV.5.1861" on the left showing a heavy refinished surface with some underlying roughness just visible. The checkered horn capped forearm rates excellent and is missing one screw. The high comb stock with cheek piece is checkered at the wrist which has a 2 inch crack and two more at the toe. It has the Swiss type buttplate showing a later added blue finish. The stock to receiver fit is slightly loose. It is sighted with an original Vernier rear peep and hooded front sight. The action functions properly with a tight lock up. A beautifully restored Schuetzen rifle that need a slight bit of stock work. Antique
