Offered is an excellent and highly desirable Colt Model of 1911 U.S. Army pistol, manufactured in 1918 during the height of World War I production. Pistols from this period represent the core of original U.S. military 1911 production and are among the most historically significant American martial sidearms of the 20th century.
Designed by John Moses Browning and adopted by the U.S. Army in 1911, the Colt 1911 quickly proved itself as a rugged, reliable combat pistol. By 1918, Colt was producing pistols at peak wartime output to support American forces overseas. Original World War I–era examples that remain intact, correct, and in strong condition are increasingly difficult to obtain.
This pistol features the standard 5-inch barrel and is chambered in .45 ACP, the cartridge that defined the 1911’s legendary reputation. The pistol remains original and unaltered with the exception of new recoil springs, retaining excellent overall condition with strong original finish and crisp markings consistent with careful preservation. Edges remain well defined, and the pistol presents with excellent overall cosmetic integrity for a service pistol of this age. Mechanically, the pistol functions properly and benefits from the addition of new recoil springs, a prudent and reversible maintenance upgrade that does not detract from originality. The original configuration and components remain intact, and the spring replacement enhances shootability while preserving collector integrity.
The pistol is fitted with correct double-diamond checkered walnut grips, a hallmark of early military 1911 production and a key detail closely examined by collectors. Fit and appearance are excellent, further supporting the pistol’s originality.
Overall, this is a strong and honest example of a World War I–era Colt Model of 1911 U.S. Army pistol—an iconic American military sidearm in excellent condition with correct features and outstanding historical significance. It would make a fine addition to any advanced U.S. martial arms collection or a cornerstone example of early Colt automatic pistol production.
