In 1934, the Austrian Police had a number of 1908 Steyr pistols reworked for police issue. Some of these, as is this example, have 'S.W.' grip strap markings indicating issue to the Austrian State Security Service. After the 1938 Anschluss, Austria became part of Greater Germany and its police force was integrated into the Third Reich National Police System. This one is all matching and has an “S.W. 4835” marking on the back strap. The initial pistol design comes from Belgian inventor Nicholas Pieper. It was very popular with military and police officers in Austria-Hungary. It holds 6 shots of .32 ACP in the magazine and features a tip-down barrel. It is a handsome little pocket pistol in great condition. This is a fairly unusual design for a blowback pistol with it having a tip-down barrel. The barrel is retained with a pivoting bolt that is held by a thumb-latch barrel locking mechanism. Manufacturing on this pistol was started in 1909 and continued until it was suspended in 1911. Manufacturing resumed in 1919 and continued until 1929 with approximately 60,000 examples produced. This example is arsenal refurbished. The blue finish is mostly intact. The grips show little handling wear. The markings are legible. The bore bright and holds strong rifling. Sharp markings. Police markings on the backstrap and magazine match. The front sight is painted orange. Own the Original! This firearm is classified as a Curio & Relic. Barrel is 3-5/8 inches. Caliber: .32 ACP (7.65mm) Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast.
