Description:

Rare German Pinfire Shotgun – Teutenberg of Hüsten – 16 Gauge – c.1850s
Offered is an exceptionally attractive German pinfire 16-gauge shotgun made by Teutenberg of Hüsten in the 1850s, retaining original, unrestored finishes throughout. This is a fine example of an early continental sporting arm from the formative years of breech-loading firearms.
The shotgun features 30" Damascus steel barrels, rating a solid 7/10, with crisp patterning and strong visual appeal. It utilizes the historically significant Lefaucheux pinfire opening system, representing the first successful breech-loading firearm design to see widespread adoption.
The gun is built on a back-action sidelock with strong mainsprings, and is lavishly decorated with extraordinary game-scene and scroll engraving. Notable motifs include:
  • Eagle engraved on the opening lever
  • Pointing dogs on the lockplates
  • Snipe engraved on the trigger guard
The combination horn and metal trigger guard is free of cracks, and the well-figured walnut stock shows no cracks or repairs. Checkering remains sharp and well defined, reflecting minimal handling over its lifetime.
Specifications & Condition Notes:
  • Gauge: 16
  • Barrel length: 30"
  • Weight: 6 lbs 5 oz
  • Length of pull: 13 3/4"
  • Missing front bead
  • Very small dent in the left barrel, approximately 8" from the muzzle (hardly noticeable and does not detract from appearance)
Pinfire guns have long been appreciated by collectors and historians alike; notable English firearms author Jeffrey Boothroyd spoke highly of pinfire systems in his writings, recognizing their importance in the evolution of modern sporting arms.
A scarce and highly decorative mid-19th-century German pinfire shotgun, ideal for the advanced collector of early breechloaders or European sporting arms.
