Description:
Antique Rare 1860 Colt 2nd Model or Type Two Conversion. Here is a rare Colt 1860 2nd model conversion.. Much more harder to find than the first models. The great book from the late Bruce McDowell mentions that all second model are rare because of the limited number produced. and finding a blued second model with any finish is extremely difficult .. Most were nickel finished.. It is in the .44 Colt center fire caliber. This gun just has traces of blue remaining around the ejector housing and the protected area on the barrel... Pretty much a no finish gun. The over all surface is a spotty stained look with minor specks of surface crud but it has no pitting.. Most all of these conversions were very hard used and abused revolvers. S/N is 195067 and all matching.. It has the standard 8” barrel that has not been cut as many of these have been. The cylinder has about 60% light cylinder scene. Just shows enough holster wear to dull it out a little but it is still there. All other markings are good. The mechanics are excellent.. Crisp and tight as a new gun.. Rock solid barrel to frame fit. Hammer notches are excellent and positive. The bore is excellent.. Bright and shiny with strong like new rifling.. The cylinder chambers are excellent as well with no roughness or bad spots.. I have fired this gun many times and it shoots great..It is out of my personal collection and I have had it since Dec. 2008. It shoots great with either the hollow base bullets or the heeled base bullets over black powder of course. The grips show a feathery type wear with chips to both front toes.. No other cracks or chips and the fit is very good showing honest wear and use. The screw heads are sharp and clean and not all burred up. Some fire blue still remains on the butt screw. The ejector rod head does not have the checked pattern { see photo } that it should have so it is probably an early time period replacement. There were very often broken off and replaced with what ever they had, some home made or from a Colt SA.. The rod is original.. The spring is a little weak but works just fine.. These 1860 conversions were the very first large frame and large caliber cartridge guns on the frontier and most you find have seen a very hard life and are in pretty poor condition. Lots of cut barrels also.. This one here is still going strong and has not been messed with.. I started collecting these conversions way before I was collecting the famous Colt SA,s because these conversions were out riding the fences way before the Colt SA was even thought about. I still love these guns and still have several in my collection. Time to thin them out just a little !!!! $50 insured registered mail shipping.
