Description:
Antique 1873 Winchester in 44-40 caliber. This is an “out of the attic” looking 1873 Winchester.. It has the standard 24” round barrel and is in the very sought after 44-40 caliber.. S/N is 489568 and was made in early 1895.. Cody worksheet is correct and will be included in the sale. To start with, the bore is excellent. Bright and shiny with strong rifling.. Has a few scattered specks here and there but an outstanding bore for an antique 1873.. Getting very hard to find bores this nice and bright on a no finish gun. The mechanics are excellent as well.. Very crisp and tight gun and it feeds, fires and ejects with no issues.. It shoots great and is still very accurate of course. The finish is a dark brown patina with a few small and very minor areas of fine pin prick pitting.. Just a little at the outside of the muzzle, some on the dust cover and on the bottom of the mad tube. Nothing bad or deep at all.. Has the original dust cover that retracts with the lever throw. Both hammer notches are perfect and positive. Has the original front and rear sights. The markings are good. The wood is still pretty nice.. The forearm is tight and full but shows some chipping loss where it meets the receiver as you can see in the close up photo... No splits or cracks.. Never sanded on or messed with. The butt stock is excellent.. It fits tight and full with no splits or cracks and shows very little if any handling marks, dings or scratches.. never sanded on or messed with. The screw heads are clean and sharp and not burred up.. The left forearm end cap screw and the main spring screw shows some tuning but are still perfectly serviceable. The mad tube its still tight in the hanger on the barrel. That is about all I can say about this one.. Just a nice and honest and never messed with ole 73 with a lot of life left..
