Description:
Extremely Rare and Important Confederate Civil War Surgeon's Kit; original black and gold paper label affixed to interior reads: "Julius & Thigpen / Surgical Instrument / Makers / Tarboro, NC"; the hinged two section rectangular shaped mahogany case with inlaid keyhole escutheon, opens to reveal a fitted brown velvet-lined interior with a departmentalized lid; the set includes a trephine set with two brass shafts, (4) Liston knives, bone saw, forceps, finger saw, scissors, elevator, bullet extractor and a set of Dr. C. H. Fitch's Prescretion Scales, Richmond, Va., Pat. Dated (1885), along with many other surgical implements. Dates: c.1860. Size:16"W x 5.3/8"D x 3.5"H. Provenance:
Descended in the Shamburger Family, Montgomery County, NC. Special Note:
While other sets may exist, to date, this is the ONLY known set by a North Carolina maker.

Reinhardt, Baltimore, Maryland, fl. 1837-1864), and set of prescription scales ("Dr. C. H. Fitch's / Prescription Scale / Pat'd Sept 29 1885... / Richmond, VA"), 3-1/2 x 16 x 5-1/4 in.
