EXTREMELY RARE U.S. TEST KRAG–JØRGENSEN CARBINE

Offered here is an very rare U.S. Army test Krag–Jørgensen carbine—one of fewer than 100 produced and believed to be one of approximately 10 known to survive.
In 1899, a U.S. Army commission was convened to determine whether the Krag rifle would benefit from faster loading via a stripper clip system. For this purpose, the Army set aside 100 carbines and 100 rifles for testing. A limited number of stripper clip assemblies were produced specifically to mount at the rear of the Krag magazine, along with specially designed clips for the .30-40 cartridge. These were installed under the Parkhurst patent device on a small number of rifles and carbines.
When testing concluded, the program was discontinued in favor of adopting the Model 1900–03 Springfield. Of the 100 test carbines, approximately 90 were destroyed, with an estimated ten released to the civilian market. This example is one of those ten.
This exceptional specimen appears unfired and retains approximately 95%+ of its original arsenal finish, with minor loss attributable solely to age-related fading. There are no rust patches, scratches, or blemishes of any kind. The wood stock is in similarly outstanding, near-pristine condition.
Markings include the Springfield Armory cartouche dated 1900 on the left side of the stock, the inspector’s stamp on the pistol grip, and the circled “P” proof. All parts are original to the firearm. The slide rail, bolt face, follower, and feed ramp show little to no evidence of use. The bore is bright, with sharp, well-defined rifling and only very light scattered frost.
The carbine is accompanied by patent drawings and period documentation describing the Army trials and the reasons the system was ultimately not adopted.
This is a rare opportunity for the serious and discerning collector seeking both an exceptional investment piece and a truly museum-worthy centerpiece.
