Description:
<<<  SOLD  >>> A scarce Joseph Harkom & Son 12-bore bar-action toplever hammergun from Edinburgh, a firm active through the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Though relatively little survives about the business, Harkom is regarded as one of Scotland’s finer gunmakers, alongside the likes of Dickson and MacNaughton. The firm was eventually brought under the John Dickson umbrella through the acquisition of T.E. Mortimer, which had absorbed Harkom in 1923.

The action is of a distinctive rounded bar-action form, with rebounding locks that flow elegantly into the knuckle. According to surviving records, this example was manufactured in 1876. Quality throughout is superb.

It is fitted with 29" Damascus barrels, chambered to 2¾" (70 mm) and carrying a later 850-bar nitro proof. The barrels ring with a clear tone. The bores show a few shallow scattered pits but remain very healthy, with strong wall thickness measuring approximately 23 thou and 26 thou respectively.

Mechanically, the gun is excellent. The action is tight, both barrels are on face, and operation has the solid bank-vault feel expected of a well-jointed gun.

The stock is beautifully figured walnut, finished with a checkered horn buttplate, and carries a neutral cast suitable for either right- or left-handed shooters. The gun is housed in its maker’s case with a reproduction label.

A seldom-encountered, sought-after Edinburgh maker represented by an elegant and highly distinctive hammergun.
