Bandle, Cinn., Ohio 4MM Parlor Rifle Offered here for sale and just acquired is a very scarce and desirable 19th century American made “parlor rifle” whose origins come from fine German makers who fabricated “indoor” target or game rifles referred to as “zimmerstutzen” …parlor or room rifles. Jacob C. Bandle was a Cincinnati, Ohio gunsmith. His business began around 1865 at Main Street in Cincinnati and continued into the late 19th century (likely until the early 1890s, with operations possibly ceasing by 1902). The J. Bandle rifle you’re asking about is a parlor rifle — a small-bore rifle designed for indoor or “parlor” target shooting, not big game hunting. These were often extremely light and finely made. They fall into the same category as garden rifles, indoor target rifles, and Flobert or percussion parlor guns that were popular in the mid- to late-1800s. When It Was Made Surviving examples are typically stamped with a patent date of July 25, 1871 however this may be very early as it is simply marked with Bandles name and city. Most examples date to circa 1871–1875. This appears to be chambered for the 4MM cartridge. In the Victorian era (mid-1800s), parlor and garden rifles became popular as recreational shooting devices.
