Description:
Superb Winchester 1890 Gallery Gun .22 Short C. 1899
Offered here for sale and just acquired is a superb Winchester rifle which combines rarity with early manufacture as well as condition.
The Winchester Model 1890 is one of the classic rimfire rifles in American firearms history. Designed by John and Matthew Browning and produced by the Winchester Repeating Arms Company from 1890 through it was one of Winchester’s most successful pump-action .22s.
It was Winchester’s first slide-action (pump) rimfire rifle and became extremely popular for plinking, target shooting, and use in public shooting galleries—earning the nickname “gallery gun.”
For collectors this model in .22 SHORT only is coveted by collectors. A 24-inch octagon barrel and takedown design are typical features of this model, especially in earlier production. Serial number 72400 falls in the production run for the second model period of the Winchester 1890. Based on historical serial number lists, SN 72400 would have been produced around about 1899–1900.  A takedown design . 24″ octagon barrel and .22 Short chambering with case-hardened receiver with adjustable rear sight and fine tang sight all desirable features. The receiver still with original case colors mixed with patina —  is often more prized than a uniform  blue. Sharp edges and minimal wear.  Top of heel of buttplate shows very light etching/pin-prick pitting. Just slightest of fine patina in the blue on barrel but all blue evident. Near mint bore is a huge plus for both shooters and collectors. Excellent stock with only one small dent in left side. We would rate this a 97-98% condition – especially for its age of 125 years. One would be hard pressed to find as equal a specimen with these variations, age and condition.
