Built in 1978 and bearing serial number 039, this 12 gauge self-cocking hammer sidelock side-by-side embodies the romance of 19th-century aesthetics paired with modern mechanical refinement. Chambered for 2.75" shells and fitted with 28" barrels choked Modified (.022") and Full (.036"), it offers classic game-gun performance with the authoritative balance and presence of a true best-quality double. At 7 lb 7 oz, with refined dimensions (14.5" LOP, 1.375" DAC, 1.75" DAH), it mounts naturally and carries the dignified feel expected of a serious sidelock. Mechanically, it remains in excellent overall condition—bores are clear, the single non-selective trigger is crisp, ejectors are strong and in-time, and the action locks up tight with smooth authority.
Where the Castore truly distinguishes itself is in its extraordinary artistic execution. The engraving coverage is extensive and masterfully executed, adorning the lockplates, hammers, fences, top lever, tangs, trigger guard, trigger plate, and all forend metal. Fine scroll and ornamental work are elevated by gold inlaid borders surrounding the lockplates and hammers, a gold inlaid serial number on the guard tang, a gold crown on the top lever, and “ABBIATICO & SALVINELLI” rendered in gold on both lockplates and along the rib. Subtle gold accents also highlight the barrel breech and muzzle. The engraving is signed by master engraver Bruno, underscoring its pedigree. Complementing the metalwork is a stunning set of exhibition-grade walnut furniture—a pistol grip stock with high comb and right-hand palm swell, paired with a beavertail forend. The checkering is sharp and refined, and a gold A&S crest is inlaid into the forend.
