This gun is in very good condition as refinished long ago. The action works perfectly. This gun is accompanied by a letter dated September 9th, 1948. The letter certifies that this gun belonged to Joseph Gibson Vaughn and was carried by him as he rode with William Quantrill and during his time as a Quantrill Raider. He was involved in countless battles and skirmishes including the big ones like the Lawrence Massacre and The Battle of Wakefield Barn where Quantrill was fatally shot. The letter says Vaughn was one of the first eight men to join Quantrill and survived the entire ordeal. Mr. Vaughn passed away on April24, 1918. This letter was written and signed by his son. The letter mentions a “scabbard" which we are presuming is a holster but unfortunately it is no longer present. Along with this gun and letter is documentation relating to Quantrill’s raiders and a book with all of the death certificates of verified Raiders. Quantrill’s raiders were a particularly violent and ruthless faction who practiced Guerrilla warfare against union soldiers and anti slavery civilians. They were completely ruthless and indiscriminate in the killing of civilians and military. This is a true piece of Civil War history and extremely rare to have a documented gun used by one of Quantrill’s raiders! Price: $18,500.00 Antique: Yes |
