Item Description:
For sale is a Winchester Model 490 semi-automatic .22 LR rifle, serial number J041733*. Manufactured by Winchester Canada at the Cobourg, Ontario plant (formerly the Cooey facility), this premium rimfire was produced primarily in 1975–1976 with total output estimated between approximately 33,000 and 59,000 units. All Model 490 serial numbers begin with “J0"; this example falls in the main production run. The visible asterisk after the serial number confirms the rifle was returned to the factory for the official March 1976 safety recall addressing potential unintentional discharge issues.
This rifle features a 22-inch Proof Steel barrel, steel grooved receiver, one-piece American walnut stock with pressed diamond checkering on the pistol grip and forend, black plastic buttplate with Winchester logo, adjustable rear sight with hooded front sight, and factory sling swivel studs. It is equipped with the original 5-round detachable box magazine (overall length approximately 3.25 inches).

All markings are clear, including “WINCHESTER – MADE IN CANADA – MODEL 490 CAL. 22 L.R. ONLY – WINCHESTER PROOF STEEL." Bore and internals appear clean based on inspection. No box, case, or additional accessories are included.
