Description:
Civil War era Smith Carbine, manufactured by American Machine Works and distributed by Poultney & Trimble.

The Smith Carbine was a .50 caliber percussion breech-loading cavalry arm patented by Gilbert Smith and widely issued to Union cavalry units during the American Civil War. Approximately 30,000 examples were produced for U.S. military service and they remain one of the most recognizable cavalry carbines of the period.

This example remains in correct military configuration and retains several desirable collector features.

Markings:

Receiver is marked:
“MANUFACTURED BY AMN MCH WKS SPRINGFIELD MASS”
“ADDRESS POULTNEY & TRIMBLE BALTIMORE U.S.A.”

The barrel bears a clear “L.F.R.” inspector stamp and the stock retains a visible “J.H.” oval cartouche, confirming U.S. military acceptance during the Civil War.

Features:

Smith Patent break-action breech system
Serial number 2191 with matching assembly numbers
Original saddle bar and saddle ring intact
Military walnut stock with inspector cartouche
Iron mounted furniture
Metal surfaces display honest Civil War service patina

Condition:

Very good antique condition for a Civil War cavalry carbine. Metal surfaces show an attractive aged patina with scattered period wear consistent with military service. The wood remains solid with expected handling marks. The action functions as intended and the firearm remains a strong representative example of this historic cavalry arm.

Historical Notes:

Smith carbines were issued to numerous Union cavalry units including the 1st Massachusetts Cavalry, 7th Illinois Cavalry, and 3rd West Virginia Cavalry, among others. The innovative break-action design used rubber cartridges to seal the breech and was considered one of the stronger and more reliable cavalry carbines of the war.

Antique Firearm

Manufactured prior to 1899 and qualifies as an antique firearm under federal law where applicable.

A desirable and collectible example of a martially inspected Civil War Smith cavalry carbine with matching numbers and intact saddle ring hardware.
