Description: Takedown percussion rifle with a 27 ¾” smoothbore octagon barrel (caliber unknown), steel hardware, brass furniture and walnut stocks. The lockplate is marked A. W. Spies, a New York gun maker from 1820-1851. The condition is fair overall. The percussion mechanism is mechanically functional. The hammer holds in the cocked position and fires when the trigger is pulled. The takedown tolerance is loose with the takedown set screw having been heavily manipulated. The bore has not been inspected. Cosmetically, the rifle shows signs of heavy use and period wear. The barrel has acquired a brown patina and has various areas of marring and tool marks. The barrel also has multiple small holes drilled in it where it was tapped for some sort of sight or attachment. The walnut stock has a hairline crack at the grip. The ramrod features a rope burned application but may be a period replacement. The rifle features German silver adornments affixed to the stock with small tacks. The silver has a light coat of varnish applied that is flaking off in areas. It is unknown when these enhancements were added but they are not uncommon on examples from this period. Manufactured circa 1820-1851. Family Owned & Operated Cisco’s Gallery deals in the rare, exceptional, and one-of-a-kind pieces that define the history of America and the Old West.
