Description:
Winchester Model 1886 Lever Action Rifle in 40-82 WCF with Factory Letter Antique, Special Order Extra Heavy Barrel
This is a Winchester 1886 rifle in 40-82 WCF with a special order Extra Heavy Barrel. The barrel is 26" full octagon, has sporting rear barrel sight and a blade front sight. It has plain walnut stocks, crescent butt plate, and single trigger. The rifle comes with a factory letter from the Cody Museum.

Condition:
The overall condition of this special order Winchester 1886 rifle is very good to fine. There is a heavy amounts of original blue finish mostly on the barrel and bolt, with traces of original case colors on the receiver, brown and gray patina on the balance. The wood has been refinished in the distant past with some small chips/slivers absent and general minor handling marks. The bore is generally bright with strong rifling throughout with some pitting exhibited in spots. This rifle is in mechanically excellent condition. It cycles a round correctly, locks up and ejects strongly. The legends are strong for the most part with the barrel address faded slighty. The screw heads are in good condition with some showing some turn wear. The wood sits fairly flush with the metal.

Turning to the factory letter, it indicates this rifle had its serial number applied on April 4, 1888, and indicates the records list the rifle in .40-80 caliber with an extra heavy octagon barrel, plain trigger with light pull, checkered pistol grip stock (this appears to be an error, since the tangs are original to the rifle serial number with no indication of a pistol grip configuration), with 13 1/2 inch pull and 3 inch drop. The "Sights: Platina bead front, Sporting leaf set back on barrel, Lyman rear." It was received in the warehouse on April 13, 1888, and shipped on April 14, 1888, in order 6147.

The rifle currently has a Rocky Mountain blade front sight and sporting rear sight on the heavy barrel which indeed has been set back. It has an empty tap hole on the upper tang from mounting a peep sight with a slight ghost shadow showing where the peep sight once sat. This is a unique Winchester special order 1886 rifle with the rare extra heavy barrel. John Madl indicated that 160,000 Model 1886 were produced between 1886 and 1935. Of these approximately 620 were of the extra heavy barrel configuration. The is a nice, very special Winchester 1886 rifle with the special order extra heavy barrel that don't come up for sale often. Being an antique this rifle can ship directly to the buyer.

****Note****  6/3/2026 Test fired - I have some loaded rounds of 40-82 WCF and used some of these to test fire this rifle. Loaded it with three rounds and it cycles fine and locks up on a live round firmly. Shooting the rifle with smokeless it was accurate out to 50 yards and properly cycled and ejected spent cases. The primer hit from the firing pin was centered and proper depth and the primer stayed in place. Also, the brass case was in good shape and showed no issues. . This was a test firing and no attempt was made to work up a load on the rifle.
