Description:
For sale is a highly original U.S. Springfield Model 1888 Trapdoor, serial number [524325 #]. Manufactured in 1891, this is the final "Ramrod Bayonet" evolution of the .45-70 Springfield. This rifle features stock Unit Rack Markings: "K 8 64" (Company K, 8th Regiment), likely from its service with the New York State National Guard during the Spanish-American War era.
Condition & Specific Notes:
  • Overall look: This rifle retaining 65% of it's original metal finish. Notably, the trigger guard has virtually "grown into" the  stock over the last 130 years. To preserve the integrity of the wood and avoid any risk of splintering or damage, I strongly advise against removing the trigger guard as it works as designed and featuring a correct serrated trigger
  • Action & Safety: The lock is crisp and fully functional. There is some honest wear on the safety click (1st of 3), but it remains functional and holds safely as intended.
  • Markings: Features the correct "SWP 1891" (Samuel W. Porter) inspector’s cartouche on the left side of the stock and the "Model 1884" stamped breechblock.
  • Bore & Mechanics: The ramrod bayonet mechanism functions perfectly, and the Buffington rear sight is intact. The bore shows strong, near perfect rifling consistent with a well-maintained armory rifle.
Summary:
This is a good example of an original matching rifle for Indian Wars or Spanish-American War collection with a great potential for target shooting.  If you need more information or additional pictures, please, feel free reaching me via E-mail with your questions.
