The black bridle leather is in very good plus shape with some crazing at the flex points and edges, as well as small areas of surface flaking scattered about, most noticeably on the flex points and on the back and bottom of the box body. The cover flap has a US sub-inspector’s stamp: "R. WHITE / US / ORD. DEPT. / SUB INSPECTOR." while the back of the box has a partially legible maker’s stamp: "(S.)H. YO(UNG & C)O. / NEWARK / N.J." The tin inserts are both in fine shape, the brass closure stud has a dark ochre patina, and the shoulder belt buckles still have nearly all of their original black japanned finish remaining. Some light verdigris is present on the belt loop rivets. The box is accompanied by a dark leather Spanish-American War era canteen or haversack strap with wire hook fasteners that is also in very good-near fine shape, with some minor crazing in spots, but the leather is otherwise supple and fully serviceable. Stephen H. Young & Co. was a Newark, NJ, maker who had a single large 1865 contract for 10,000 infantry accoutrement sets, with this box a part of the contract. The box is in very good plus condition overall, and would make a handsome addition to any collection.; Price: $595.00 |
