Description:
This is a very rarely seen private purchase French M1874 revolver, chambered in 11 mm French cartridge. The gun appears to have over 97% of Arsenal applied finish with no pitting or corrosion anywhere. All the edges are crisp. Excellent hire and grips. Everything appears to function as it should with a tight cylinder lock-up. The only markings on the gun are the
"St. Etienne" on the right side of the frame, and two commercial St. Etienne proofs - one on the chamber and one on the cylinder flute. There is also a small proofmark on the front cylinder face.  Most of the parts are serialized internally only with number 80.
There is some sort of unit marking on the butt -  here its most likely meaning:

In the context of the French military, "ing" is typically an abbreviation for
ingénieur (engineer) or ingénierie (engineering).
Key details regarding this abbreviation in the French military context include:
  • Ingénieur (Ing.): Used to designate a military engineer or technical officer, such as an Ingénieur militaire.
  • Context: It is often used to signify individuals with specialized technical training within the armed forces, frequently appearing in the context of the Ordre des ingénieurs (in French Canada/Quebec, which shares the same terminology).
  • Military Branches: Technical and engineering officers are heavily involved in the Génie(Military Engineering branch).

As I understand, most of these were made for private officer sales and were used extensively in WWI as well.
