Description:
Here is a Winchester model 85 - Production date of 1907 shipped to warehouse in 1910. This rifle has been modified on the receiver to facilltate and make it easier to load and unload the 22 LR cartridge.The gunsmithing was done by H Pope including a Pope barrel, the receiver where it has been notched or modified is stamped with ( POPE ). This rifle also sports a very nice Schutzen Stock. If perhaps u wish to be a Marksman or a Precision shooter this rifle will let you be one. This rifle has set triggers a push trigger at the rear which in turn sets the front trigger. The scope being a tasco has a adjustable optical front lens, with the variable rear lens giving you 6 to 24 power. Winchester Collector
• Winchester Blanks: Winchester sold new smooth-bored, unrifled barrels, and sometimes barrels bored for smaller calibers, directly to Pope, which he would then rifle to his exacting specifications.
• "Pope" Barrels: While many consider "Pope barrels" to be his own creations, he frequently used actions from Winchester Model 1885 High Walls or Ballards, fitting them with his own custom-rifled barrels.
• Reboring/Refinishing: Pope was also known to take existing barrels, including those from Winchester, Stevens, and Smith & Wesson, and re-rifling them with his distinctive, high-precision methods.
• Markings: These barrels, while often marked "Pope" or "Stevens-Pope," were sometimes left with no external markings on the barrel itself, though usually stamped under the forearm. Yes, Harry M. Pope did use smooth-bored (unrifled) blank barrels, including those from Winchester, to work on. Winchester sold new smooth-bored (unrifled) barrels to Pope, and probably also sold him new barrels bored for smaller calibers. Pope rifled the barrels and finished them. If one of Pope’s customers wanted his 1885 rebarreled, buying a barrel from Winchester and then reboring it would have saved a lot of work. Would said barrel be marked Winchester? My guess is that it would not.
